still smaller than a ukulele (and a stalk of brussels sprouts), but we need a fiddle player so we’re hoping he grows fast :)
Annie Bacon writes sad songs in the major key.
Backed by the OSHEN, (drummer Art McConnell, bassist Cristian Hernandez (OneSideZero) and a rotating cast of other musicians), she cultivates your empathy while making you smile and sway.
The OSHEN combines Annie’s emotional impulses and sweet voice with highly literate lyrics, harmonies and driving rhythms. The songs are upheld by their stories, in the folk tradition, exploring themes of loss and love through the eyes of strangers and self, but the presentation veers between a “folk-pop playfulness” and the renegade rock influence of Annie’s former band Sweet Crude Bill (in which she played bass).
Originally from Maine, Annie has forged a performance style that is flirtatious and engaging. She is equally at home in a gritty basement bar or in front of a rapt audience, as a solo artist or with a full band. In addition to singing lead vocals, Annie plays guitar, ukulele, and bass, and is backed by bass, drums, often fiddle and, when they’re not busy with their incredible lives, a duo of angelic-voiced back-up singers. The OSHEN made its debut in June of ’08 and released its second EP – There Is No Reason Here (There is only a persistent feeling that we ought to look closely and love deeply) - through the Ninth Street Opus label in Berkeley, California in 2009. Their newest album, Live at Red Devil Lounge is a thrilling snapshot of the band’s utterly engaging live show.
The OSHEN has just completed their first full length album, due out in early 2012.
